Broward Workforce One Collects 10,736 Pounds of Food
The WorkForce One teams in Broward County not only work hard to find jobs and careers for the unemployed, they also have been collecting five tons of food for the hungry.
The staffs of the four regional offices of WorkForce One in Broward - Hollywood, Pompano Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Lauderhill - are all participating in the food drive which started in mid March and continues through the end of June.
"It is amazing to see how the WorkForce One team not only works to find jobs for many unemployed people but that they also have room in their hearts to care about the hungry", commented Marti Forman, CEO of The Cooperative Feeding Program, one of the programs benefited by the food collection. "All too often the hungry are the unemployed or even minimum wage working people who just cannot make ends meet".
Many people experiencing homelessness in southern Florida work every day, but do not earn enough income to pay for food and housing. A minimum wage worker would have to work 114 hours a week to afford a two-bedroom apartment, according to HUD standards of affordability.
"We just wanted to do something special for families who, through no fault of their own, cannot feed their children", explained Natasha Beaubron, who coordinated the food drive at the Hollywood WorkForce One center, where they collected 7,125 lbs of food. "This is the second year we have done this event".
The Cooperative Feeding Program has been serving the hungry and homeless of Broward County for the past two decades. Every day an average of 100 hungry families collect emergency food rations from the agency located at Broward Boulevard and 33rd Terrace in Fort Lauderdale and another 300 people eat a hot meal there each day.
