April 2005
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive - 300 Volunteers Needed in Broward County!
On Saturday, May 14, 2005, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will hold its 13th Annual NALC National Food Drive in over 10,000 cities and towns throughout all 50 states and U.S. jurisdictions. This is also the largest one-day volunteer event in the nation!
To participate in the food drive, residents are asked to place a bag containing nonperishable food next to their mailbox before their letter carriers deliver mail on May 14. The letter carrier will then pick up the food when they deliver the mail. They'll take the bag back to their postal station where United States Postal Workers, NALC members, and volunteers will sort the food and get it ready for distribution.
Locally, The Cooperative Feeding Program will receive food collected from 15 post offices and distribute the donated items to thousands of hungry families in crisis - half of whom are children - throughout Broward County and South Florida. The agency is asking for 300 volunteers to help between the period of 2:30pm - 6:30pm to help in the sorting and boxing of the donated food.
Suggested nonperishable items residents can donate are:
- canned beans and vegetables
- canned meats and fish
- boxes of rice, macaroni and cheese
- containers of peanut butter
Residents are asked to please be sure all food is in cans or boxes - no glass items please for safety's sake! Just leave them out for the postal carriers on the morning of Saturday, May 14th.
